About Us
We are based in Melbourne, Australia! Nanook was born on November 5th, 2020 in Tasmania! She came to us after the loss of our beloved German Shepherd. Nanook introduced us to the world of lappies and boy was it a beautiful one. We have connected with amazing people and their dogs in the lappy community. Nanook is very intelligence, funny and intutitive, with a touch of sass. Nanook recently passed her assessed to be a Delta Therapy Dog and we are so excited to go out and meet people and help improve the lives of everyone we meet.
We then decided to add a second lappy to our family, little Meya was born on November 6th (yes, they almost had the same birthday!) 2022! She came to us in New Years day on her first plane ride from New South Wales! Meya is so gentle, sweet, silly and dramatic! She is an incredible lappy and we are so thankful we have her in our lives. Nanook loves her little sister and vice versa. Meya is about to take the plunge into the dog show world, and we hope that Meya like her mother and big sister also becomes a therapy dog in the not too distant future.
Fun Fact: Meya is actually Nanook’s niece! Nanook’s half sister is Meya’s Mum!
About our Breed
Finnish Lapphunds are a breed of dog that originates from Finland. They are part of the Spitz family of dog breeds and are known for their herding and guarding abilities. These dogs have a rich history of working alongside the indigenous Sámi people in the northern regions of Finland, Sweden, and Norway.
Here are some key characteristics and information about Finnish Lapphunds:
- Appearance: Finnish Lapphunds are medium-sized dogs with a sturdy build. They have a thick double coat that comes in various colors, including black, brown, tan, sable, and wolf sable. Their fur is dense and weather-resistant, making them well-suited for colder climates.
- Temperament: Finnish Lapphunds are known for their friendly and gentle nature. They are intelligent, loyal, and get along well with children and other pets, making them good family dogs. They can be reserved around strangers but are not typically aggressive.
- Activity Level: These dogs are moderately active and require regular exercise to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. They enjoy outdoor activities such as walking, hiking, and playing fetch.
- Trainability: Finnish Lapphunds are intelligent and eager to please, which generally makes them trainable. However, they can have an independent streak, so training should be consistent, positive, and patient. Early socialization is important to ensure they grow up to be well-adjusted adults.
- Herding Background: Finnish Lapphunds were historically used for herding reindeer and other livestock by the Sámi people. They have a strong herding instinct and may exhibit behaviors like circling, nipping, or barking to manage a group.
- Grooming: Due to their thick double coat, Finnish Lapphunds require regular grooming to prevent matting and to keep their fur in good condition. Brushing a few times a week, especially during shedding seasons, can help keep their coat healthy.
- Health: As with any breed, Finnish Lapphunds can be prone to certain genetic health issues. Responsible breeding practices and regular veterinary care can help mitigate these risks. Common health concerns for the breed may include hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and certain skin issues.
- Size: Finnish Lapphunds typically weigh between 33 to 53 pounds (15 to 24 kg) and stand about 16 to 21 inches (41 to 53 cm) tall at the shoulder.
If you’re considering adding a Finnish Lapphund to your family, it’s important to do thorough research to ensure that their characteristics and needs align with your lifestyle and preferences. Additionally, finding a reputable breeder who prioritizes the health and well-being of their dogs is crucial in obtaining a healthy and well-adjusted puppy.
